OST 142 — Medical Terminology II is the second in a two-course sequence that introduces students to the language of medicine. This course builds on foundations established in Medical Terminology I and focuses on the structure, pronunciation, and meaning of medical terms related to major body systems.
Upon successful completion, students will be able to:
- Break down medical terms into component word parts (prefixes, suffixes, combining forms)
- Build and spell medical terms accurately using correct word-part conventions
- Pronounce medical terms with confidence using phonetic breakdowns
- Interpret common abbreviations, acronyms, and eponyms used in clinical settings
- Apply medical terminology to simulated case documentation (SOAP notes, operative reports, lab values)
- Translate everyday language into medical language and vice versa
This accelerated 8-week schedule covers two body systems per week in the first half, followed by integrated review, midterm, and cumulative systems. All due dates are posted in Canvas with automatic reminders.
